Common Sensing

Exploring the practice of ‘Dialogue’, as conceived by David Bohm, which is not simply a conversation but a disciplined and structured process for meaningful communication.

Bohmian ‘Dialogue’ is a process through which a group of individuals can develop and share meaning together. The late theoretical physicist David Bohm (1996) believed that shared meaning was necessary for society to work; for Bohm shared meaning provided the glue or cement that held a society together.

Dialogue is a way of observing, collectively, how hidden values and intentions can control our behaviour, and how unnoticed cultural differences can clash without our realising what is occurring. It can therefore be seen as an arena in which collective learning takes place and out of which a sense of increased harmony, fellowship and creativity can arise.

“The point is that this notion of dialogue and common consciousness suggests that there is some way out of our collective difficulties.” – David Bohm
